People have a set of fairly chronic identities, things that they think about a lot. A particular identity is more likely to become salient in a context where it differentiates you from others. For example, for a woman working in a male dominated industry, her gender or sex identity may well be more salient to her than would be the gender identity of the men in that same workplace.
