Plato's Complaint About the Democratic Regime
Socrates says democracy is ruled by unnecessary pleasures. They're still lawful pleasures, so they don't involve the kinds of extravagance that are going to characterize tyranny and the tyrannical soul. But what this really means is a regime that's characterized by hobbyists. We all run off to our own private conceptions of the good or private preferences without considering what we ought to give ourselves over to in common.
