The Souls of the Righteous Are in God's Hand
Brahms had one of his few public failures, as the tympany player misread the forte piano marking in the score. It's a reminder that composers have to leave a lot to chance when they allow their creations to go forth into the world. This passage does have issues, but the timony part shouldn't be one of them. After long expanses of lyrical poetic music, the piece seemed to end by clubbing the audience about the head.
