Is There Such a Thing as Emotional Intelligence?

Emotional intelligence seems like a concept that people would make up to get some one to work on a deficit. The term emotional intelligence is being derived in part from a tradition of sociological thinking about emotional labor, and the way communication skills are becoming used by corporations as profit generating mechanisms. So what began as a form of labor starts to look likes an individual aptitude. And so what, for me, at least, that iccludes is the really, really concrete social relation, the relationship between an employee and the corporation that employs them.
