The Irish potato famine of 1845 and 1846 was probably the first case of globalization leading to a public health disaster. The Lazaretto hospital, which was originally designed for about a total of 48 patients sometimes had you know, over 100 patients being treated at a particular time. And it highlights two important lessons of the history of quarantine: one is that diseases never happen in a vacuum.
