The most trivial thing you can do is make sure that you actually have a debug pin or something on your microcontroller. It's just someone released, you know, an electrical engineer wasn't really aware of this and did not pull in the firmware engineers as part of the design review. We didn't find out until it was most of the way through layout and we were going to get a new board that still didn't have the one thing that we wanted.
