Aquinas - The Dominican Order, Part II - Checks and Balances
The structure of the Dominican governance is really remarkable. It's a religious order within the church that develops and is kind of decades and centuries ahead of its time in terms of dispersing political authority. There's voting that takes place at all levels. Higher authority kind of checks or confirms the exercise of the lower authority. The higher authority is limited. Their term limits are short, so there's high turnover of those who exercise authority. But again, Aquinas would have experienced this.
