Zen Buddhism and Shintoism - The Relationship
The tokugaa regime was determined to snuff out christianity. Forty thousand temples were closed, and this functionally fired thousands of priests. The maji oligarchy tried to re integrate zen buddhism back into the government's good graces. They did this through promoting what they called the great teaching - which was heavily more shinto.
