Sources say Apple planned the switch to applesilicon years in advance. They wanted it to be secret from the supply chain, so that if anything did go wrong, they didn't want intel to know until as late as possible. If you're going to make a big change, try to change as few things as possible. Only change one thing. And that's enough change for an entire product generation.
