Is There a Paternalistic Struggle to Educate the People?
I was at a conference recently where people were having grand conversations about how we can change India. And one of the academics present there used a phrase that didn't quite resonate with me in the sense that she said that we need to educate the people. I absolutely hated that phrase because it just seems so paternalistic and patronizing, like we know everything, they know nothing. But Gandhi did have a point where he said that you need to change society from the bottom up.
Society cannot be designed in a top-down way. Central planning was a historic blunder that harmed India -- even though it was conceived by great men with good intentions.
