Better Baby Contests

In the late nineteenth and early twentieth century, there was a child welfare movement that was concerned with high rates of infant mortality in the united states. These contests were put on by local health officials who were firm advocates and proponents of eugenics. And some of them even went so far as to have something called fitter family contest, where they would measure the whole family,. Right, to see if they were a eugenically fit family. There is a kind of a eugenic aspect to the better baby contests as well.
