The brain is changing the firing of its own neurons to prepare for incoming sense data that it's expecting in the next moment. If i ask you to imagine a mackintosh apple, a red apple, imagine holding it in your hand and looking at it, and imagine what it feels like. Imagine taking a bite. You sink your teeth into the apple.
