"Sometimes it pays to, you know, to play high stakes and not be the winner," he says. "You always wonder because tennis isn't the clock." Tennis players have to figure out stuff to do when a match is going on for two or three hours at a time. He plays backgammon with his mom quite a bit still; they've played hundreds of times.
