Cook Swamp - A Long Lost Landscape

The mounds were grind stones used for processing the Taro basically. With regular controlled burning, the people at Cook Swamp can keep the grasses down and away from their crops. The repetitive creation of mounds help to keep the soil fertile by bringing up new nutrients year after year. Later, a couple of thousand years after the mounds were created, we start to see evidence for large drainage ditches on the site.
