The Telephone Game Against the Story of Jesus
Christianity was a purely oral tradition for 30-40 years before the first gospel was written down. The stories of Jesus were being passed around orally, and just like the whispered sentence of the game is corrupted after just a few repetitions,. We have no reason to think that the first people telling stories of Jesus would be immune to the universal human conditions of imperfect understanding or memory. But this is why it's so wonderful that God gave us a written standard because a written standard doesn't change over time.
