Rosalind Crown is a senior lecturer in history at the Open University. She specializes in 19th century criminal justice history. Treadmills were popular in medieval Europe as well, but their function was to lift heavy loads. There are some lovely examples of these in Britain and Europe which had been either preserved or reconstructed for the public to see.
