The only way we would actually know about speech, at least its place historically is by the existence of writing. We have to acknowledge that there is an entire matrix that kind of gravitates around logocentrism and scientificity. So what Darrida's trying to show with deconstruction is that the subordinated term in the binary between speech and writing does a lot more than it is given credit for.
