The Negative Effect of More Experience on Outcomes

Marty McCarry: More experience actually could have a negative effect on outcomes. He says the field of medicine is constantly evolving, and there's always new knowledge emerging. As you get further away from residency, that knowledge gets somewhat ingrained in you, he says. So I think what happens is that older physicians are just less up to date, if you will. McArthur: Even as a tenured faculty at Johns Hopkins doing complex surgery, I'm still learning every day.
