The Importance of Bangana Can in New Music

Bangana Can started out as a kind of DIY marathon concert put on by three young composers in 1987. By the late 1990s it had established a significant institutional infrastructure for itself and really strong ties to classical and contemporary classical worlds. The book is about what I call this kind of marketplace turn and new music which is that there are all these different institutions from DIY things like Bangana Can or kind of small academic record labels like composer recordings Inc to big classical music institutions like Sony classical or BMGor another record label or Lincoln Center who are beginning to think that contemporary music can both be a source for renewing their audiences.
