The book Brotherless Night is written by Vivi Ganeshananton, who is also of Sri Lankan Tamil descent. The British colonized Sri Lanka and promoted many English-speaking thumbles to work in civil service or government positions. When they left, there was the notion that a majority Sinalese government could redress this inequality. We feel those attacks on the thumbles through this one family, through this one young woman, Sashi.
