The Origins of the Dory Foros
The Dory Foros, or canon, is representative of the transitional period from early to high classical sculpture. Dating to around 440 BC, it depicts a young man carrying a spear and stands almost seven feet tall. He represents the epitome of humanism, in terms of an ideal man being an athlete and a warrior. Another famous work by Polyclitis was the Diadomenus, or the Youth of Tying a Headband. The original bronze dates to around 430 BC, but it is again only preserved by a Roman copy. This one is housed in the National Archaeological Museum of Athens.
