Mission Control's Sun Alignment Problem
Astronaut Jim Lovell explains the radical solution. Using the Sun for Alignment is less than perfect, far more inexact than using distant stars. But it's essential that this rough alignment check works. They couldn't do a real platform alignment in the lunar module. And we came up with a little test where by looking through a telescope and if they could see any part of the Sun, we were close enough.
