Allusions to the Song of Songs in the New Testament
Commentators who adopt an allegorical reading of the text often hear the exodus in the background of this section. In verses eight to 17 of chapter two, the lover comes. Messiah read in the manner that john seems to invite us to the song is a song of longing, anticipation and desire. It's a song of escatological expectation. Jesus is the greater son of david. He is the one whom israel longs for as its bridegroom.
