Is There a Penoptic Situation?
Colonized people see the colonial language as a way by which they can enter into a better life. And this presents a kind of, or opens up a kind of penoptic situation, where suddenly colonized people start to turn against each other. People who adopt the colonial way of life then turn against those who refuse it. It becomes associated of a time long past, almost like an archaic element of the past.
