Is There a Religious Defense of Enslavement?

People came up with various different explanations for how it is that enslavement could be justified. It's a sign that there was at least personal discomfort, or perhaps some sort of collective discomfort they wouldn't feel like this was necessarily right. There are not movements as such that are aimed at the abolition of slavery itself. And so I want to be clear that in talking about anti slavery today, what we'll mostly be talking about is efforts by people who were neither slaveholders nor slaves to challenge that system.
