I wouldn't bet all my money on the fact that there is no special source in dendrites. We just haven't seen it yet. In fact, we have proposed that a cluster of signups might be the smallest computing unit. You only need something like five to eight spines activated together to generate a dendritic spike within a compartment. And if you consider this computation and nonlinear computation, which essentially, that's what it is, then you can think of having many such clusters of signups as within a long dendrite that each of them would be a computing unit.
