How to Build a Research Team That's Huge

Most companies don't have a research team that's huge, like Google or Microsoft. Most companies have small research teams or even just research teams of one. For those companies that are smaller, let's assume that they have a lower research maturity. Are junior or senior researchers generally better suited for those companies? I could be wrong, but that's been my experience.
