Introduction

The January jobs report was twice as large as economists had expected. There were plenty of layoffs in the tech sector, but they are still a very small portion of the labor force. Despite that big jump in the number of people hired, wage gains stay basically on trend. The stock market finished Friday down and it did finish with some selling.
