What Is the Need for Reparations?
There was a strongly implied need for reparations. A major proposal by a few of the radical republicans in the 18 sixties would have shifted not just political power, but also economic power. Can you imagine if that had happened? The idea of confiscating the property of one class and distributing it to another was more than most northern republicans were willing to do. They believed in the sanctity of private property.
