How Psychology Gets You To Slow Down While Driving

Psychology in Everyday Life: The Psych Files

CHAPTER

The Book Nudge by Richard Thaler and Cass Sunstein

There is a street called Lakeshore Drive, very famous road that apparently hugs Lake Michigan coastline and has some quote stunning views of Chicago's magnificent skyline. At the beginning of the dangerous curve, drivers encounter a sign warning them of the lower speed limit. And then a series of white stripes painted on the road. The stripes do not provide much if any tactile information, because they're not speed bumps. But rather they just send a visual signal to drivers. When the stripes first appear, they are evenly spaced. But as drivers reach the most dangerous portion of the curve, the stripes get closer together, giving the sensation that your driving speed is increasing. We can get you to slow down.
