The Importance of Higher Salary for Scientists

There is too large a spread between the upper and lower ranks of scientific incomes. Few professors earn more than 2,000 pounds per annum. Not many research posts are given to honors graduates at less than 100 pounds a year. The Department of Scientific and Industrial Research treats postgraduate research as training for future work. And accordingly only gives grants which are, in any case, small, averaging 130 pounds.
