The Little Rabbit

The little rabbit grew very old and chavy but the boy loved him just as much. He didn't mind how he looked to other people because nursery magic had made him real. And when you are real shaviness doesn't matter. But then one day the boy was ill. His face grew very flushed and he talked in his sleep, so hot that he burned the rabbit when he held him close. The velveteen rabbit lay there hidden from sight under the bedclothes. For he was afraid that if they found him someone might take him away. It was a long weary time. A light burned all night through it until the boy came home again.
