One out of every five times we try to resist a temptation that's getting in the way of a long-term goal, we fail. If we're tired or stressed or busy, those stats are even worse. For really meaningful goal things that we really care about, it's abysmal. 8% of New Year's resolutions are kept till the end of that year. 25% are gone by the first week. And so I think relying on this idea that humans are like computers and can convince ourselves to do the right thing if we have enough willpower is misguided.
