The Panama Canal opened on August 15, 1914. The ship SS Ancon sailed through the canal's three level Gattun locks in 70 minutes. It is one of the largest man-made lakes that'll ever exist. After sailing 22 miles across a lake and part of an river, it enters nine mile long labor cut.
