Devotion Is the Joy of Pleasure

The two sides of this ladder represent prayer, beseeching God's love, and the sacraments that confer this very love. The rungs are the different degrees of charity by which we advance from virtue to virtue. Through their holy prayer, they have wings to soar upward to God, but with their feet, they walk alongside their fellow men and women. Each man and woman takes only what is needed for his or her particular walk of life.
