Historiansplaining: A historian tells you why everything you know is wrong
Menendez's Mission to Spain
In 15 66, menendez travelled north and established a fortress with a garrison of 200 men on saint catherine's island. The indigenous people in that area were the wale - suffering from severe drought. According to spanish accounts, menendez encountered the wale just as they were preparing to sacrifice captives for rain. And supposedly he persuaded them not to make the sacrifice but instead return their captives back to their home country. This gave credibility to his message and helped pave the way for missionaries to evangelize and convert the wale.
