roger bannister was the first person to break the record for the four minute mile. He also trained to be a medical doctor at oxford university. And he was doing laboratory research on the roll of oxygen on physical performance. That led him to understand that actually, if he was going to run faster, he had to get better at conserving how he used oxygen. Therefore he developed a different running style, essentually htit was more efficient and effective.
