Brahms held a thinly veiled contempt for most women, while hopelessly idealizing them as both mother and virginal figures. Brahms could be a warm and comforting figure at times, but his anger and notoriously churlish personality would often come out when speaking of women who did not fit his standards of decorum and chastity. In vain is for the line, i will comfort you as one whom his mother comforts, brahms brings the dynamic down to a whispered pinisimo, and the comforting colors of the first movement return.
