Al Mahmoon's Inquisition
Traditionalists among the ulama, specialist scholars of religious law, were championed by caliph. Al mahmoon would claim as only permissible truth doctrines that had been a red line for the umayats. This meant more wiggle room for the caliph including his emphasis on pagan, greek learning and falsafa - islamic term for philosophy. The meaner was an attempt to insure the caliph's central role in determining religious orthodoxy.
