How Does a Wearable Technology Help Deaf People Interpret Sounds?
David Weinberger is an expert on brain plasticity, perception and neural processing. His team has created a wearable technology that helps deaf people interpret sounds. The vest is covered with vibratory motors like the little motor that buzzes in your cell phone. There are 32 of these on the vest. And we capture sound in real time, all the sounds going on in the environment,. We translate that into patterns of vibration on the torso. So, as a deaf person wears this and walks around the world, they're feeling this pattern of touch on their torso. They can come to understand what is being spoken and all the sounds of the world.
