This chapter traces the shift in social belonging from tribal identities to individualism to the state's disruption of traditional community associations, examining the decentralized power structures in the Middle Ages and the modern state's centralized power. It also discusses intellectual criticisms of traditional community institutions in the 19th and 20th centuries in favor of autonomy and freedom.
