He must have been aware at some level that his mother was trying to ride his coat tails into this world. For your parents to expect you to be in this upper echelon and in this tiny chance of success, it must have just felt like a treadmill that he could never do enough. He's stealing from other rich kids. And the way this escalates is that he gets later on a job at a restaurant where he's stealing the credit card numbers off of all of the credit cards of the patrons.
