Goldwater is approached to write a book summing up his beliefs and political ideas. The original plan with the conscience of a conservative was that business conservatives would buy it, that it was going to be produced. It's very explicitly meant to be re defining conservatism so that people no longer see it as a project of a small number of wealthy people,. But there is obviously an irony that the book is for all these claims very much produced within this business mobilization.
