I liked the guess about it may be being related to anthropomorphism, because this touches my little biology heart. We are trying to build a model of the universe inside our head to understand our experiences. So yet, we got to put ourselves in it also. That's why we talk about particles, sometimes as tiny, little balls of matter and sometimes as waves of stuff. And what else can you do? I don't mean that critically. Unless you subscribe to max tegmark's idea of computon how the whole universe is somehow self aware.
