In the first decades of the 20th century a small group of famous academics symbolically led by John Dewey and Edward Thorndike decided to bend government schooling to the service of business. Standardized testing would eventually be used to separate those fit to breed and fit to work from those unfit. Because of its traditions, however, America was a resistant population on which to experiment.
