GL calls aren't along the lines of Canvas where you say, here's my primitive. They're a lot lower level, and they are really complex and stateful. A typical Android view hierarchy maybe has, what, 100 drawing primitives that you see on the screen at once. So we'd have many, many draw calls into GL. But there's just a lot of code in the driver to handle every single one of your calls Into GL.
