Father John Uitz recorded an account of a ghost dance at Pine Ridge. Black Elk was as sensitive as anybody to the horrible situation his people were in, and he ended up becoming a supporter of the ghost dance movement. The dancers unconscious condition was the state of dying, and the medicine man told them that in this state they would see the Messiah and their deceased parents and friends. Those who died in this way would be especially sanctified.
