The Federal Job Guarantee
Stephanie Coontz: I was particularly struck by your explanation of a federal jobs guarantee. If you want a job and you cannot find work anywhere else in the economy, you can walk into one of the thousands of American job centers that exist all over this country. The idea is to set up a program that ensures that anybody who wants to work can have meaningful work doing things that serve the community. So it works like an automatic stabilizer. It becomes an incredibly efficient way for us as a country to sustain the economy without shoveling money into the bank accounts of big corporations.
