The idea that this was the first flowering of modern human culture is wrong. It came from the fact that there really wasn't a lot of research in Africa at the time. People knew that there was a Middle Stone Age culture, but people thought it was much younger and that it was equivalent to the Upper Paleolithic rather than older than it. And so it led to this idea that whatever was going on in Africa really couldn't compare with what was happening in Europe.
