Debs and the Appeal to Reason
In 1904, Debs began running for president as the candidate of the Socialist Party of America. At its peak, his newspaper was the most popular political newspaper in the nation with half a million subscribers. He and others who were pushing this idea were actually far more radical than anything that now passes for socialism.
